Its in Spanish, but its what I do all the time. Seprojoven (which sorta means Educational Services and Promotion for Youth) is a local non-profit that works with youth to promote healthy living and uses cooperative games to teach conflict management and responsable decision making.
They are also my counterparts in the Copa Indigena. Dates on this promo poster are obviously way off.
Working with indigenous communities from isolated zones puts a whole bunch of roadblocks into the plans.
We're supposed to have the first camp next week, which would be a huge deal. 32 indigenous leaders and youth are supposed to come to San Jose from 8 different communities around the country. It's going to be a training the trainers type of thing. We need them to come together to plan details, make this project their own, begin the process of forming a national network of indigenous youth, and just build relationships. We need to plan community festivals, learn how to play futbol3 (which incorporates social values into the game) and distribute equipment (thanks Scotiabank for the jerseys and balls!).
However, due to rain, bridges got washed out, rivers grew too big to cross, roads have been closed, landslides happened all over the place, the actual campground almost closed, bus companies called to say they couldn't guarantee service, and frankly, we don't quite have enough cash yet to feed 40 people for 3 days.
So did the dates really get pushed back one more time? This is beginning to kill me.
The good news is that it isn't killing anyone else. People are bummed that we haven't started yet, but they are so much more relaxed about it. When I call, embarrassed, to let people know of yet another change of plans, they just respond calmly, let me know when. But on that day when it finally happens, we will all be so excited.
This is my project. My stress. My ambition. That thing that makes me frame my future. Its intense. But, its going to be good.
